Canelo vs Benavidez: Juan Manuel Marquez asks WBC to strip Saul Alvarez of title if he refuses to fi
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez remains the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
However, in order to keep proving it at every opportunity he is constantly asked to take on big fights against top opponents, such as David Benavidez, as Juan Manuel Marquez has pointed out.
The successful Canelo Alvarez is at the peak of his career and, although he still shows he has it in the ring, he knows that staying at the top has a price which means the end of a historic career, sooner or later. But before that happens, the former boxer is asking the Jalisco native to fight Benavidez.
Juan Manuel Marquez wants Canelo to fight Benavidez
The legendary former Mexican boxer referred to the possibility of Canelo fighting David Benavidez, and recommended he to do it as soon as possible.
"He has more than a year as official challenger and I think the most feasible thing is that the World Boxing Council will have to disown Canelo as champion if he doesn't accept the fight immediately because he is their official challenger.... It could be in May or September, but I think the most important thing is that he is the official challenger and has to face the Mexican fighter," he said for ProBox TV channel.
In case that fight doesn't happen, Marquez wants the WBC to disown Canelo for not accepting the challenge.
"Benavidez is raising his hand and is hitting on the desk saying 'I deserve the opportunity..... Now, what does the body have to do if Canelo Alvarez doesn't want to fight Benavidez? They have to strip him of the title. They have to disown him," he added.
How many more years will Canelo remain active?
In addition to this, at 33 years of age, Saul Alvarez himself acknowledged in another interview with Hugo Sanchez that he plans to continue fighting for at least another four years.
"From 28-29 years old is where I have felt the best. I've always said that 37 is a good age to enjoy what I've done with my family, of other things in my career and that's what I think; but I said I would debut at 18 and I did it at 15," said Canelo Alvarez on the talk show 'Hugo Sanchez Presenta' for ESPN and Star+.
The Azteca, the big date that Canelo has pending
But before thinking about leaving, Canelo warned that first he wants to organize a fight in the highest sports venue in Mexico, the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
"Yes, I am interested in fighting at the Azteca Stadium. I would love to have a fight before retiring at the Azteca," said Alvarez.
Canelo gets ready for his next fight
It should be noted that after beating Jermell Charlo, Canelo Alvarez said that "I will fight again on May 5, 2024 against anyone, I don't care... throw me anyone, no one can beat me".
It should be noted that, in 2024, May 5 will be a Sunday; therefore, the date of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's next fight would be one day earlier, Saturday, May 4, with the venue to be confirmed and with the list of opponents who wish to fight 'Canelo' featuring David Benavidez at the top of it.
